Psychiatry and Psychotherapy for Individuals, Couples, and Families
Samuel Lim, MD (he/him/his)
I am a board-certified psychiatrist in private practice in New York and Oregon. I offer an integrative approach to understanding your inner experiences, current difficulties, past history, and biology. I am interested in working with a wide variety of issues, including but not limited to relational / family issues, traumatic experiences; and the impacts of race, gender, sexual orientation, culture, immigration, and class on identity and personal development. I work collaboratively with my clients and aim to have generative and expansive conversations that promote curiosity, understanding, and ultimately change that feels positive to them.
My services include individual psychotherapy, EMDR, couples therapy, family therapy, psychiatric diagnostic evaluations, second opinions, and medication consultation. I typically work with clients in depth, meeting once weekly or more frequently for psychotherapy. If you are considering psychiatric medications, my approach is to first understand you and your situation holistically, as well as any concerns you might have, before recommending any specific medication. Please note that my private practice is entirely virtual and as such, I do not prescribe controlled substances.

After completing residency in psychiatry, I spent 5 years as Physician-in-Charge of the Behavioral Health Crisis Center at Zucker Hillside Hospital, an academic walk-in clinic located in New York City. At the crisis center I provided short-term mental healthcare, while simultaneously connecting people to longer-term treatment. During my work there I developed expertise in first encounters with mental health services and crisis management. I also supervised an interdisciplinary team comprising other psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, psychologists, and licensed clinical social workers.
I currently hold an academic appointment as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. In my academic life, I teach and supervise medical students and residents, with a particular focus on psychological trauma, relationships, and talk therapy.
